January 23, 2018: The University of the Philippines (UP) and the University of Makati (UMak) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to collaborate in designing programs that will provide Chinese language and culture learning in the UMak, upgrade the quality of Chinese language instruction through immersion programs in China, capacity-building for teachers and students, and faculty scholarship grants in the Chinese language.
UMak will offer Chinese language and culture credit courses to comply with the Philippine Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order 23 series 2010-Implementing guidelines in the inclusion of foreign languages as electives in the curricula of higher education programs.
UMak has been identified by the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) as an institution capable of delivering the Chinese language and cultural programs of the Confucius Institute at UP Diliman (CI-UPD). UP and the LCP entered into a Memorandum of Understanding dated October 04, 2016 whereby UP, through the CI-UPD, agreed to coordinate with LCP in creating partnerships with LCP member cities in teaching Chinese language and culture to schools in their respective localities.
UMak is one of the 145 City Colleges & Universities run by the Philippine local governments located in major Philippine geographical locations: NCR, Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao.
There was an initial MOA signing during the UMak Industry partners recognition day on November 29, 2017.
